My pink and gold paly need a lot of light to be really colorful.  If they are at the bottom of the tank they are just plain brown, but when I put them right under the metal halide they take a very beautiful gold center with pink skirt.
 
Palythoas need a lot of light in general.
 
brown = not enough light
