I recommend this: you go with the full photoperiod you want to go with (so, if 9 hours, then 9 hours) BUT, with varying on and off during that time. So, something like 15 minutes on, 45 minutes off - for 9 hours. Then after a few days, 30 minutes on, 30 minutes off. Then 45 on, 15 off after a few more days. Eventually all on and then you're set.

The other option is put layers of eggcrate over the tank and the desired photoperiod right from the beginning. After a few days remove one layer. Repeat this until they're all off.

Above all, observe your corals, if it looks like you're progressing too fast, then slow down or back off a bit .. and so on.
