If it were a deep sand bed (> 4" deep), then I'd be concerned about disturbing the sand because H2S and other toxins may be released into the water column potentially causing harm to your fish and corals. Since, it's shallow, I wouldn't be concerned. A DSB should be greater than 4" and it's probably a good idea to do the transfer. If it's less than 4" deep, then you have to do the regular maintenance of vacuuming up the detritus.
