. Do you mean something like a LiterMeter in terms of pumps? I was thinking along the lines of a perstaltic pump, since the fancier varieties are out of my price range for the time being.

Exactly what I was thinking. I want to get another firefish (I have a glass top now) and something else too. Any suggestions? I've always been into Banggai cardinals but I worry my system is too small for one.
