22g is far too small.

I would try to fit at least a 3' or 4' stand (something in the range of a 50g breeder and up). That will give you more room to fit a decent sized skimmer and all the other equipment (ie. heater, return pump, various media reactors).

If its a 6' tank, I would go with a 4' sump if you can fit it in your stand.

My 210g & 220g (6' x 2' footprints) for instance have a 75g & 90g wide as sumps. Sumps this size should be 18" or so tall (not too tall or makes it harder to service equipment inside the sump). Preferably, sumps should also be wider than 12" to make it easier to position the skimmer.
