Thanks everyone, things are beginning to make a lot more sense now.. I wasn't sure because a lot of the pictures I saw on the internet and some fish in aquaria, were really dark, almost black on their sides. I hadn't realised that they stay orange until paired or a lot older. Naively I was thinking that after a year he'd be more of less mature. Clearly I was wrong..

It's interesting to know that you can pair the different species though - not that I'd have any interest in doing so, or raising the offspring, for starters I don't have the facilities or time to do it.. Although I can see that if you have a load of eggs it might be very tempting to raise them.

Maybe I'd better just get him an anemone instead...!
