If you use photobucket, they give you the img and url tags for embedding photos and videos, which is nice, all you do is copy and paste.
Not sure why the smilies window doesn't show up for you, offhand the only thing I can think to suggest to check is if you have popups blocked .. but if you did then you'd probably have trouble with PM's too so I'm not sure what could be up with that one.
