Actually, I did spend about $1,000 with taxes added 1.5 years ago for my S40.
At that time, for an extra $100, I could have gotten a G2 for really good Macro. The Powershot S40 has 2 known limitations and that is poor macro and poor flash. The benefit of the S40 over the G2 is the compact size.
