I dabble a bit in windsurfing. I have ancient gear too but it works. I'm more of a sailor though, I kind of gave up on windsurfing because I can kill *any* wind by rigging up a windsurfer. No, really, I'm not making this up. All I have to do is rig up and the "wind warning" winds will dissipate. My brother is more the windsurfer, he'll still make the occasional trek down to the gorge or Squamish to go. He's also getting into kiteboarding.
In Calgary it's almost a completely dead sport.
It's partly due to the fact that there's nothing around here though. Nearby there's there's Ghost and Chestermere, or a few diehards will make a weekend of it and go down to Old Man.
Kiteboarding on the other hand really seems to be picking up the slack. Still the same problem for people in my area though.
