I did exactly what you are describing...with Gold Stripe Maroon clowns. Follow Iron_Chef's recommendations exactly. In my case, I used one of those strawberry baskets with a rock on top to keep the smaller clown alive. He only had to spend a day or two in there. When first introduced, there is no doubt that the smaller one had only minutes to live before I rescued him.
Now, they are a breeding pair.
