Just make sure the exiting branch of the T is above the water level and you should be fine, leave the adjoining 90 degree and its attached length of PVC.

As far as adjusting the skimmer, they've changed the RS models to include a twist/lock standpipe vs the original riser tube. Just twist the tube to raise the water level in the skimmer.
