i've tried running an ubuntu live cd but for the life of me cannot get a wireless connection hooked up even. i've looked into online tutorials and done some reading and really don't find it all that user friendly at all yet! any suggestions from those who know better? some advice for me perhaps?

Responding from a laptop running Ubuntu (debian - gnome) wirelessly. You can get it to run from the CD, but you'll hate the performance.
I don't really recommend any distro (except Mac

) for non-technical people or non-adventurous souls - there are just too many little things. Invest a little time, and you'll find there's little need for Windows.
Your question about wireless is tough to answer. It is likely a driver issue, but you'd need to take the question to an Ubuntu forum, and include details about your CPU, Wireless Card, and specifics of the error or issue. It can (and does) work, but not for everything. Sometimes, there just aren't any workable drivers for a particular hardware device.
Cheers,
