You don't want to do the first and it's unnecessary to do the later. The standpipe won't even be draining water unless the grill clogs. As for putting the two pipes together, it defeats the whole purpose of running a silent overflow since the line coming in will suck in air. Two seperate drains. The primary one uses the valve, the standpipe is jsut backup.
