A coast to coast overflow is where the overflow stretches from one end of the tank all the way to the other.

As for the thickness of glass, you could get away with using a thinner glass as once the tank is full there is no real pressure being applied to the glass. Just take care when filling your tank and try to fill both sides of the overflow simultaneously.
