It's easier to get one now that you start with unlimited invites instead none when they first started. They used to only give you invites if you used your account regularly.
Right now you get 2.6 gigabytes (and rising) of storage, but your attachments can only be 10MB max. For most users this is "virtually" unlimited storage. So by the time your gmailbox fills up, harddrives will be sold in terabytes... Useful for storing MP3s though.
Another big deal of having one is that you can forward ALL the email addresses you've collected over the years to your gmail one and filter them out using "labels" or bounce them to another account. You can also send messages using your old email address through your gmail account too.
The biggest deal of all is that it's free and you don't have to wade through 10000 ads and popups just to check your email.
