I agree. My work takes me away from home frequently, although I've been on holidays lately and it's been awhile since I was gone.
Anyway, I got into reefkeeping with the assumption that being gone for 4 weeks would be okay. Although, I've been gone only once since I set up the tank, everything went fine and the salinity did not rise nearly as much as I thought it would.
Do the water change before you go and after you get back and maybe your wife could just top up with freshwater, at the very least, while you are gone.
