I think that's the main reason, although I have a Derasa, Squamosa & Hippo clam with my seahorses.
The other reason might be that seahorses prefer tanks that aren't so bright while most clams need MH to really do well (like Maximas & Croceas - which are the most commonly available).
My seahorses swim right across the clams without any trouble, but my clams are strange that way. Some clams slam shut at the slightest stimuli & would injure or kill an unwary seahorse. My clams are kept right at the top while my seahorses prefer the bottom of a PC lit tank.
