Who here has had clown's spawn?
The best clue I can think of is that both fish, but particularly the male, will start to get fastidious about cleaning a particular spot on the rock, which will become the nesting area. They may both stay close to the nesting area but the male will be the primary caretaker of the eggs, constantly cleaning them, fanning them with his fins, and not straying too far from the spot. The female may stay close but may wander from time to time too (but usually goes back).
I personally can't tell by looking at the plumpness of the fish. I've been fooled many times this way, although, logically it would seem that she would be plumper just before a spawn.
Let us know if you do get a spawn soon! Once they start, they can spawn quite regularly.
