Yes these have only been used on freshwater tanks as per the flow I'm not sure wether it would be to much flow for a 20 gal tank as I am not to knowlegable in saltwater tanks . Pehaps someone else could post in here that is knowlegable about whether the flow rate would be to much or not on the 404
