There are a number of different designs depending on size and whether you want to include a refugium. I did a lot of web searches before I designed mine. One link to get started at is

I use a 30 gal long on my 90g aquarium. It is divided into 3 compartments: intake and skimmer section, refugium then return section. My return pump is a submersible as I did not want to drill this tank for an external return. I use 3 baffles between my intake and refugium and two baffles between refugium and return. Why? Because that is how much acrylic I had to work with
