"quiet one" pumps
Just my 2 cents worth .
I have a 6000 and I find it hot and not particulaly quiet......but no breakdowns....YET :eek: on the up side from J&L they are about $50 cheaper than other equiv. pumps ie...

If the male (sorry but your aggressive "guy" is most likely a "gal" by now)
that you add is significantly smaller than the female.....he cowers immediately...

pH on pure H2O
I will second that:
pH meters need at least a trace of electolyte to give a reading even close to accurate. Add just a smidge of table salt to your RO water and see what happens.

coral survival
This summer...during the heatwave, I drove about a dozen SPS and LPS frags from Calgary to Victoria....total time apx 48hr.
I didn't have to worry to much about heat, but the styrobox works better...

Having many small frags and several Conan sized hermits and two large tubos...I hear ya!
When I get tired of uprighting, I glue to a bigger rock. Esp for the digitata...just snap it off the frag...

zoo lighting and skimmerless
I agree. My zoos under 250mh+ skimmer do OK, But the zoos (some the same) do Grrreat in my 15 tall (apx 20in deep) under 2x32w PC (50:50) and no skimmer.
The nano water is maintained with 3gal/2wk...

cover for overflow
It has been suggested before that plastic "gutter guard" ( cheap too) works well. It has smaller holes than egg crate and is flexible . I plan to use it over my new overflow. I made a shallow tray...

Guard your Noodles
I use a dacron filter bag (300micron?...big)that fits perfectly over the grill......samething as the sponge,but the dacron isn't as good of filter,so you only need to clean it apx.weekly.

Quiet ones
A Quiet one pump came with a skimmer,I bought recently, a 6000, I think.It pumps well enough to run a beckett (about 1500gph) with the gate wide open, but it gets quite warm and it isn't really is...

My favorite: if there are pieces of gravel or rock stuck to the coral, super glue that to the rock...toad will attach...

My experience is the same as Christys. My purple chases the orange but no real aggression. For now I also target feed, untill the politics gets worked out.

I agree that regular glass blocks most of the high energy UV (depending on thickness and clarity) but wouldn't tempered glass be more prudent for this application due to the heat?
