Hope it's optional, because many of the people I know using them are using regular media :)
My one friend spent a month trying to figure it out, doesn't sound like a regular reactor at all :)

Not sure on price, mine was bigger and I gave it away. But for lighting, it was bright green across the room under MH, T5 or LED. Added a great blast of color to the tank and was an attention grabber...
