When I used to dose I was testing weekly to make sure that the levels hadn't dropped too far. More if I felt it was necessary.
Your dosing needs will be dependand upon types and number...

Putting sugar sand into a system and waiting for it to clear up is not a long wait as it has been shown here. With proper circulation your tank will clear within a few days.
