What I do to vacuum the sand is run the end of the hose into a filter sock in the sump, then vacuum away until I'm bored. No water removal and gets all the gunk out. Remove sock :)

I wouldn't leave any 11yo sand in the tank, IMO :) Critters are good, somewhat over rated for sand cleaning, but cool to have. Stirring the sand before a water change might be more benefit.

MAG 12 loses a lot of power running through 40ft of plumbing. You might get about 250 or so GPH at the end. I use one for my water changes and it takes about 10 minutes or so, to move 40g to the tank.

I would remove old sand, 1/3rd at a time, a few weeks apart. Siphon out with water change, replace with new sand. Do left, right, then center, or some version of that.
