What I have done in the past (one time) is to saturate the pliers with WD40 in a plastic zip lock bag. Seal it up and reopen in a week. Good to go!

I would switch your skimmer and return sections. Split the overflow water and have one of them go to the macro algae part. I would have this overflow empty into a filter sock on the right hand side...
