I run 2 skimmers in the same sump. If there were deleterious effects I wouldn't notice them...

My bet is on the snail. Some snails make pretty unique egg cases. I have seen interesting egg collars off the coast of Galiano Island made by the Moon snail, they look somewhat similar.

Just the filter floss, cleaned or replaced regularly, and carbon changed periodically are good enough. Bio balls and sintered glass are designed for fish only...
