All good suggestions. I'm pretty sure it's not the "brand" of bulb as I bought four and the two I used for the past year were just fine with the same ballast.

Trying it on someone elses ballast...

cost of parts?

Any thoughts on cost of parts (in particular the flanges and the acrylic)? What sort of pump will you run it with? I'm kicking around either buying a Tunze 230 or building a Beckett style skimmer...

I've always just siliconed over the screws once I'm sure the pump will be there long term and if I suspect them to be a danger. Much easier and safer than opening up a pump IMHO.
