No light. It is in a room with no windows in the basement. It has a lid but it doesn't cover the entire top because it has changed shape from the weight of the water.

Mine has never done that. What do the leds indicate? Maybe the float switch is bad. Are you using one or two? Did you check the switch for that to see if it has changed?
