Mine has a foam silencer as well. That is not what I mean. The outside nozzle tip can be partially plugged with a strip (that you would have to cut) of coarse foam. You can then lift it up or down...

I had to clean mine with vinegar, keep water...
I had to clean mine with vinegar, keep water level at a steady 7 in., and partially block the air intake with a piece of very coarse black foam. After a few months, it started running properly.
