It would be cheaper to use "dead" sand and seed it with a few cups of live sand. Im sure you would be able to get a cup or so from a few different people.

I think I have an exact same crab as you Chin. I have him in my sump/fuge now but used to see him all the time in the main tank scrapping coraline off of rocks to eat. Never seen him "test" anything...
