With adequate lighting and random flow, the coral will, in time, grow to the shapes you see in pictures, provided you don't frag it unevenly. You get weird shapes when the coral is either pushed one...

You went the right way. This was my tank a year ago before I added 2 filefishes. They never picked on corals except one torch which was ugly anyways! Zoas, SPS, Elegance, frogspawn... all untouched...
