I use a fan directed right at my water surface when the temps get really high, but then my evaporation goes way up and I end up using a whole lot more ro/di for topoff. So I guess my way also wastes...

Trying to eradicate and scrub off every tiny trace of algae in your "reef" tank. Reefs in nature have algae. If your tank is in balance it will always have some algae but will not over run the tank....

+2 keep a shallow sandbed and vacuum it...
+2 keep a shallow sandbed and vacuum it regularly. If its too deep and established, try easing into it. Vacuum the top 1cm and in a couple weeks go another cm etc. That's kind of what a sand sifting...

I used a bubble magus bm160 skimmer on a 70 gal...
I used a bubble magus bm160 skimmer on a 70 gal and it worked well. The aquabee pump it came with was a good pump. Paid less than $200. I then upgraded to a PM Bullet 2 on a mag12 and it also works...
