Well, I tried regular pane glass from the glass shop and it works great for... about 2 minutes after which point one hears some snaps and pings.. and the glass is cracked. I didn't know it...

I just have the one DVD with the Coral Seas on it, and I love it. I want to get the other two DVDs soon too. The cinematography, like any other BBC work, is amazing! Highly recommended.
