can you overdo a fishs' exposure to light in a tank just by using power compact or vho lighting

I kinda doubt it with all us folks using MH, VHO and PC lights on our tanks. But, honestly, I never really considered your question before.... Maybe someone who actually knows stuff around here will offer a REAL answer

I don't know much either, but I like your answer a lot!! My fish are under 1000 watts of light and they don't seem to have any little tan lines or nuthin"

You gotta also remember that fish are normally under the SUN all day, and I doubt any lighting we have comes even 1% close to the amount of energy the sun puts out.

just curious,

'cause in the wild a lionfish (for example) wouldn't spend a lot of time within 20 inches of the surface (comparing depth to a quote normal unquote tank depth) and the light energy decreases pretty dramatically with depth
