Hair Algae
What do you fine folks recommend to keep hair algae in check? as in fish ?
Brent  |
IMO it is hit and miss with fish, it also depends on what strand of hair algae you have. Having a variety of different fish makes the chances, better. Tangs, blennies, some angels. My favorite algae eater is the sea hare, Hard to find and hard to keep but they mow over hair algae like nothing.

a sailfin will do it . mine did achilles will mine did
turbo snails will work ,trocheus snails lots of tang will ,but its a hit or miss mike |
IMO, if it looks like crap, it probably tastes like crap. I can't say I had any luck with fish eating hair algae. I just did frequent waterchanges and cured the problem that was causing it in the first place. Of course that doesn't always happen.

Adding more fish = more nutrients. Not what you want when trying to eliminate hair algae. Try to limit the growth factors of the algae; light, phosphate and nitrate. All these feed the pleauge.
So, first thing to do would be to drop your photoperiod. Next try and get phosphate and nitrate levels at, and maintained, at 0 ppm. Waterchanges definatly help but only if you are using filtered water, ie RO/DI, ect... What are some tank specs and maintenance habits? |
