Ditch Refugium for Frag Tank?
I have a 30 gallon refugium within my sump that hasn't been all that relevant since I started running biopellets. The Chaeto is surviving but no longer flourishing like it was at one time. The wildlife in there is diminishing as well. I found the fuge priceless during the first year but less now that the tank is well established.
The question is should I ditch the refugium and convert it to a frag tank? FYI - 200 gallon main tank with 250 lbs of rock and 150 lbs of sand. |

If you feel like you don't need that big of a refugium you have right now, you might want to make a part of the refugium as frag tank without totally eliminating it. Just my 0.05 (since 0.02 are no longer available in market in terms of coin ;) ) |
I would definitely keep my sump, just eliminate my refugium. I wouldn't lose any water volume, just repurpose the space. I don't see anything different in the fuge than I do in the tank lately...

I ditched my refugium very shortly after I brought my bioPellets online. That was 3 years ago. I didn't really see any benefit in the refugium anymore. Biopellets take care of nutrients and pods are still plentiful throughout the tank.

Yeah if you're running pellets and have the amount of rock that you have, I wouldn't see an issue with taking it offline. You can always add a remote fuge later on if you notice any ill effects.
