It's too loud !!!

I just purchased a Aqueon 120g w/dual overflows . I was so excited to finally get something that I thought would be dead quiet but it's Not. Before I spend a bunch of money that I don't have, I thought I'd ask you guys & gals for advise.
So the setup : dual overflows w/durso drains - thru 1" corrugated hose ( THIS IS WHERE THE NOISE HAPPENS ) - into an Eshopps dual filter sock holder, on the sump .
Now I'm running a quiet one 4000 return pump - do I need more flow to fill the drain hoses ?
Or
Should I put ball valves on drain hoses just before sock holder ???
Also 1 of the drain hoses makes a curly Q to get it into the bulkhead on the sock holder.

To be honest the noise isn't too loud but water trickling thru drain hoses , I thought I'd like to eliminate the extra noise if I could .
Thanks Mark

I would swap the lines out the either PVC or vinyl hose as the coragated hose will remain noisy no matter what. How did you do the dursos

The durso's are a kit that comes with the tank - I think . I bought it used but saw the exact same thing as a complete setup at lfs.
Are there different ways to do the durso's???

This is one of the two for my 175g that I shut down after Xmas plead excuse the fact that its far from clean. http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/...pscf14fc51.jpg here is a link to the web site http://www.dursostandpipes.com/ I've ran them on all my tanks and love them dead silent too. Also at the filter socks try to minimize that open air drop as it makes a bunch of noise.

Ya , that's what mine look like . I've inserted small pieces of PVC pipe in bottom side of bulkheads in filter socks to minimize water noise into sock .
I think I'd be happy if I can eliminate noise thru hoses .
I'll try new hose & maybe throw some ball valves in to try .

So is your water noise dead quiet from overflow to sump ?
Did you install ball valves to control flow ?

Mike-fish 02-12-2013 04:33 AM

On that tank I didn't have ball valves on the drains but on the new 270g I have valves but they always remain wide open I just have them there as a insurance policy. There is no noise throughout the system all I hear is the skimmer and pumps. My over flows are combined capable of 4000+ gph. Almost double my return pumps so I have a huge safety net.

drain

switch your dursos for stockmans .they take up less room easier to clean and get rid of the corrugated for a smooth drain.i wouldnt bother with ball valves on the drain and try to flow the drains as direct to the sump as possable

Well , I've spent all day driving around getting wrong fittings , fittings that didn't work & spending money I don't have ! Finally I got all the fittings & re-plumbed so it all fit & looked pretty . I start it up & it's the same thing if not noisier . So I cracked a beer & relaxed for a bit so I didn't kill someone ! Then I thought, I didn't try the kiss method (keep it simple stupid). So took all the prettiness I just created off & started again .
There are 1 1/4" barbs off the durso, so I attached 1 1/4" smooth hose & ran it right into the socks . Started it up & it's a little quieter then when I started but not silent !!!
Maybe I'm asking for too much or am I missing something ???
Still it just sounds like water trickling thru the hoses & maybe durso .

how big of hole a the top of the durso. how far does the water drop going into the overflow
