Big enough pump?

OK so I bought my system used and the return pump is old and noisy, It pumps from my sump to a T it seperstes to a reactor and to the DT I can't identify the name brand of the pump but its about the same size as the new quite one 4000 I have new. The distance from the 20 gallon sump to the 40 gallon tank is maybe 3 to 4 feet? http://www.marinedepot.com/pumps_pen...et_one-ap.html Without know the gph of my old pump could you guess if this would be similer or better? I really want to know if this new pump will work with my system http://www.reefescape.ca/forums/imag...on_biggrin.gif Thanks!

what size are your drain holes/hole?......the biggest worry is that the tank cant drain what the return is putting in to it....

I use this pump on my frag tank with a single 1" drain. I just use a valve on the output of the pump to scale back the flow a bit. So if the OP had a 1" or greater drain, the pump should be workable.

very true....I just thought perhaps being that the display is 40g and not knowing what the original return pump is, there is a slight chance that the drain could be 3/4.....either way, knowing what the tank is capable of draining is the first step to choosing what return pump to use....

Agreed. A single 3/4 would probably require too much throttling on the pump.

Thanks for the info, yes the return is a 1'' and I do have a valve. I'm nervous about switching pumps before going to bed so I might wait untill tomorrow:biggrin: I do have a valve so I can turn back
