NEWFIE MUMMERS!
 

I was talking to me mum in law who is newfie. Im not. Anyway, we got on the topic of the 12 days of christmas and she says it ends on Jan 8 and thats the day mummers go around the towns. She was surprised I didnt know about the 12 days of christmas and when it actually is supposted to happen. Im portuguese, we have different traditions lol.
Any newfies know about this? It peaked my interest. I know all about mummers Im just wondering about the day. I just thought it happened around christmas time.

what's a mummer?

mummers go caroling door to door dreesed up in what ever one wants...its customary to invite mummers in for food drinks and good music


with that said if i were to go carroling in calgary with mits on my feet socks on my hands underwear on my head.....im pretty sure i would be arrested....citys suck for hollidays.....no traditions anymore:(

In my 30 some years I've never had carolers come to my door. But if someone did come caroling at my door I would let them in for a drink.

LOL. Mummers are people who dress up silly. "Men dressed as women and women dressed as men" as the song goes :). You dress up very aquard so that no one knows who you are. Shoes and socks on your hands and mittens on your feet. Underwear on your head and so on, as was mentioned before. You go door to door singing carol's. People let you in and you sing in their house. Basically have a party as they try and guess who you are. No sitting around its all fun. Then you go to the next house.

Anyways, my mom in law says its the 8th of Jan that it is done. The last offical day of christmas. Possibly because there is so much drinking and late night parties that day that no one can do anything more anyway lol.

I see mummer stuff placed out for halloween all the time in bookstores. I need to remind the book people that mummers are christmas not halloween. They look at me like im an idiot then I have them read the summary on the back. LOL. The book gets put away until the holidays hahahaha.

Mummers still go around sometimes. In a few years once I finish having kids and they are a little bit older I want to start a caroling group and go around a few times as regular carolers and another as mummers :) I would love it if it became an annual thing again. :)
