If I had to do it all over again, I'd rent an excavator. I think I'm still feeling the effects of hand digging this thing 2 years later.

Wow!! Very nicely done :biggrin: Perfect job for the area you chose and to dig it by hand! How long have you been working at this? Nice selection of rocks as well, by their colors, sizes and shapes. Did you find (hand pick) the big rocks?

Broke ground in July 2009 and it's been an ongoing project. Everything was done by hand. There's no shortage of rocks in this country so I decided to use mostly fieldstone. I'm lucky enough in my line of work to be able to pick any good looking rocks from the roadsides in my area. I also have a couple of co-workers with massive rockpiles on their land. I can't imagine what I would have paid if I had to buy all of them. Rocks at landscape stores aren't cheap. Alot of the aquatic plants were hand gathered as well. Cattails, reed grasses and others from sloughs and ditches helped to cut down the costs.

So how deep is yours?

PS. Love your tiger lillies. And that hill must be a bitch to mow!! :lol:

I was going for 4 feet in the deepest part but I hit sand at 40". It's about 38-39" with the underlay and liner in which is more than enough.

Nice. Mine is 24" (mainly for the sake of my young kids), but I'm thinking of renovating mine next year to add another foot.
