Fragging Duncans
 

I have a duncan coral that's growing in a ball outwards.
From 4 heads the size of a marble it's now bigger than a golf ball and shows no signs of branching.

How, if possible, would I frag this? just cut through and let it heal?
or just let it go and see if its going to branch?

The ball shape is just getting a little odd to place without smothering some of the polyps.

They handle being fragged very well however the skeleton is quite dense and strong so the easiest way is to use a saw of some sort. I've used a diamond wheel on a rotary tool, wet tile saw and wet diamond bandsaw. But if you want to be really low tech just grab a chisel and a mallet. Usually I try to cut around the polyps but sometimes I go through and they heal up anyways. You could probably do anything and they'd still heal just fine.

They are so tough! I once cut a frag in 2 and sort of sliced through a head. I scraped most of the remaining head because I was afraid it would rot. I only left a tiny piece that I could barely see but in no time not only did the head grew back, but it also made tons of babies. This is one tough coral!

So yes it will probably heal very fast. They grow new heads extremely fast but for them to develop each their own branch takes forever. They require good level of calcium.
