I see this "thing" everyday sifting through the sand. It is always in the same place and it retracts when light is on it. I showed the picture to the LFS and they could not identify it. Its shiny greyish color.

I think it's a peanut worm.
They are nocturnal, and as far as I know totally safe.

Normally I would agree but I have a chalice that is retreating on one edge but I couldn't see why. The other night I had a peek in the dark and I see a peanut worm eating at that edge.. it could be the worm is just eating dead tissue but I don't think so as the chalice is otherwise very healthy.
