lighting requirements

Well I set up my first freshwater tank today. Ok, I've had 'em for years years but it was long ago...those of you who had stainless steel trim on their tanks know how long...
I'm going to talk with a local lighting supplier tomorrow for some supplies and I wanna' get some bulbs too. 4' fluorescents. I stole a couple of the wifes "plant/aquarium" bulbs but I'm not happy with the look. Too green. What kind of bulbs might I look for to obtain a "whiter" look ? Will I get "that look" if I request a 6500K bulb...

Is a powerglo enough lighting to keep plants?

StirCrazy 12-30-2003 05:29 AM

depending on the plants and depth of the tank, yes.

Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking of trying to keep plants in my 90 gallon which has a depth of 24inches (48x24x18). Would a single 48" powerglo be sufficient?

nope I don't think 10 would be either, unless you are doing very low light plants. I would actualy look into PC's for that deep of a tank

Butters I've got a 90 gallon plant tank and I can tell you from experience, you need LOTS of light for the majority of plants. I'd stick with MH, PC, or VHO but keep your colour temp around 5500k to 6500k
