Help - Red Algae - Type and how to stop it

Hi,

My tank has all of a sudden started growing a dark red/purple algae that is basically starting to cover everything. Have been told its coraline algae but not sure. Its not slimy to the touch but forms like a thick woven blanket. How do I stop it as it covers everything and seems to smother whatever it covers.

Thanks
Wayne

Use a turkey baster to suck out as much as you can and do a water change. Increasing circulation in the tank prevents it from taking hold. You should also check your water parameters. Coraline makes a hard skin over the rocks and glass that can only be scraped off. If it is soft and can be sucked off the rocks easily it is cyano algae.

cyano

get some cyano remover-add three days before a water change and start using coral snow-it helped with my problem cyano

Combine both the above advices- and you should be rid of it! :D

If it forms a thick woven blanket, it might be turf algae. Either way try reducing your nitrates and phosphates. Foxface will eat it as will some tangs.

Have you checked your nutrients?
