UPS Brokerage Fees
I see UPS has dropped some of the fees for import into canada. Last time I looked they charged a hefty fee if the value was over $20.00. Still not good enough IMHO

So where do you claim the parcel and how do you advise on shipping ?

I tried to clear an item once through customs myself. It was a real pain. I would not realy want to do it again (though I'm sure once I do it a few times, it would become easier). There were no signs. I went to a window which turned out to be a cashier (no signs). They sent me to someplace else (no signs). Then there was no one there so I thought I was in the wrong place. Then I waited 15-30 minutes for someone and finally got an officer. After doing the paperwork, they sent me back to the cashier. All in all, it took a long time out of my lunch hour. I guess its fine if you know the procedures but if you don't, there isn't anyone to help you out. There were no signs or instructions that tell you who to see or what forms to fill out. You just have to keep asking people. I think for business people who clear things all the time, there were computer terminals for them to use.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and you first need to make a trip to your shipping company to pick up the import forms that you then must bring to Customs. After you clear your package, you then bring the forms back to the shipping company and pick up your goods. |
