herbie

Is there anyone out there that has some info on the Herbie plumbing system? If so I would be interested to hear it and see any diagrams that may be out there. Tx

there is a really long, and cluttered thread on Reef Central. However, you may want to look at the modified version.

If you do a search on this site for threads with 'herbie' in the title you will get 20 results.

Fancy looking overflow but that isn't the Herbie design. This is the original Herbie thread: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=344892

I know, that is why I put the "modified" in my post.

comments to rban's diagram
-have the back up a little higher and run dry
-use gate rather than ball for easier adjusting

There are great drains. Been in front of 2 different tanks each flowing about 2000gph. Truly silent, no gurgling in sump, the only nosie you will get is from the waterfall effect into the overflow chamber so keep level high.

Thank you all

Thank you all for the advice. The diagrams were particularly helpful. I think however that since I only have two holes drtilled and not a lot of space in my block out I will probably stick with the durso for this tank. Thanks for all the help.

You can still do a herbie with two holes if you wish. Take a closer look at the diagram provided by mark, only two holes needed since the return is over the top (no third hole required).

I think he wants to use the other hole for a return.

...which he could do if he forwent the backup drain. In theory, that backup never sees a drop but if a snail or anything else ever even partially blocked the primary....well....things could get messy in a hurry.

I wouldn't take the chance, personally.
