RS-180 Skimmer Pump replacement options, I need your advice.

As some of you know, we did not start up this store from scratch, but are always improving it.

I have noticed some of my pumps for my Euro-reef RS-180's are showing small signs of rust, and the odd seized impellers on the GX-4100 pumps.

Here is my dilemma, replace the Impellers, or get replacement pumps.

What I have researched so far is the Sedra 5000 or Gen X-4100 would work.

I also found a source for the impellers (www.reefdynamics.com)

Both cost the same, so I was thinking the replacement pumps would be a more economical choice.

Anyone else have experience on other pumps that work with the RS-180?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hey,

I have the same unit... Don't use the Sedra 5000 pump as it isn't powerful enough, as I had tried.

But I found the needlewheel impeller from it, is almost exactly the same, so I put that into the original GX-4100 pump and it works flawlessly.

Now if you need impellers, Dennis @ Gold's in Calgary has 2... He will probably give you a good deal, as I won't take them anymore, as I now don't have that skimmer in use.

Hope this helps.

I was told that the 3500/5000 inpellers were similar. Thanks.

Hi Ken,
If you do order impellers for you skimmers, could you order a SP2 for me too. Here is the link. http://www.reefdynamics.com/SP2-Comp...p-cpia-sp2.htm

I'll see what I can do.

Might want to look at a Bubble blaster 3000 Ken. I tried a Sicce on my Vertex IN-180 and didn't like it, and then bought a BB-3000 and I'm really happy with it. Much better then the stock pump...I know they are different skimmers, but fairly same in design.

rjengen, my pump just failed on my Vertex 180. I've been reading that the bb3000 works well with it, however, I have the first generation of these skimmers, any chance you know if it will work? What gen is yours on?

Thanks,

Jay

Not economical but if you have one on your shelf, the Eheim 1262 is a by far better pump for that skimmer.
I used the sedra and then the sedra with mesh mod.
I think got a Eheim and its better then it ever was with the sedra, mind u the eheim is over 100$ and new impellers are 80 plus shipping
(btw mine took 3 weeks us post)
I have a old needle wheel with the mesh mod if u want for the sedra for ummmm..... oh lets say shipping costs.

Hi Ken, I have the same skimmer/pump with the same issue. Did you find a solution?

BlueWorldAquatic 10-22-2010 06:08 AM

Yeah, I decided on the Sedra 5000. If you need a impeller only, the needle wheel one works fine.

I also found the EcoPlus 1056 works well too.
