Skimmer question

How do I find out if a skimmer is big enough or not without referring to the spec?
Nitrate level, algae ... etc? Thanks:razz:

If you have detectable nitrate or an algae problem then its pretty safe to assume you need a larger skimmer. Specs by the manufactorer are more of a guideline than a rule. If you stock very light, feed little and do regular water changes you may be able to get away with running an undersized skimmer. In general its less costly in the long run to buy a good skimmer rated for more than your system volume.

Well that pretty much some's it up Just remember when having a smaller tank it s easier to get a bigger skimmer to clean your tank. when you get into bigger tanks. then you have to watch out what you are doing. with me my 150 gal reef and a 20 gal sump with my bubble king SM 250 its skims alot and to much ,but i dont have to worry about nitrates and other nutrients in the tank and i can feed lots when Im bored.
