I use a TLF phosban reactor the same way. Quite a bit cheaper and does the same job. I've even seen people use old Gatorade bottles if you are really hard up on cash.
It works fine, but I wouldn't use it as a primary Ca/Alk supplementary method on anything bigger than a 33 gallon or so - there's nothing but the movement of the topoff water to keep the kalk in solution so you get quite a bit of settling at the bottom. I use mine mainly to keep pH up in conjunction with a Ca reactor.
