Plant growth in Coral/fish tank - question
My tank is pretty much free of any nuisance algea or other annoying growths - except for this one. This grows on top of some live rock and around a plate of monti. It looks healthy and all, but is it ok to leave and is it indicative of something not correct? Tests are all within acceptable ranges.
Thanks |
Mmmmmmmmm yummy..... looks like salad.
I have been trying to get rid of it in my tank. It seems to take over with viny growth. Not sure of the name though. Quote:

halimeda algae
It is slower growing, but I pull it out of my tank as it uses up an enormous amount of calcium to grow and I dont fancy buying supplements so my macro algae can flourish :) I would rather the calcium I add to the tank be used by my corals. |

Hi Len
I take it right out as well  How about some new photo's for me to drool over  of the tank of course  Leah |
Thanks all....it looks like I will be doing some Halimeda picking tonight
Too bad my lawmower blenny isn't feasting on it.
Will be happy to send you a few new pics Leah. |
It is a hard plant so the lawnmower blenny won't touch that. They usually only eat softer algaes.

I guess it's one of those things that depends on the person if it is a good idea to take care of, much like mantis shrimps, hermit crabs, and mushrooms, xenia, bristle worm etc. If you don't mind dosing a bit more calcium they can be good I guess. The only thing that it seems like everyone agrees is bad are cyanos and hair algae.

I think this is a good algae to have. Yes, it does pull some Ca from the water. However, it is also pulling some nutrients...so if you remove it, something else will find a way to use those nutrients and you may not like what grows in it's place.
